Bias Incidents Reported

In an effort to communicate incidents of bias to internal and external campus community members, the Bias Education & Response team disseminates statistics of bias incidents throughout the academic year. The following report summarizes bias incidents that were reported August 2010 through August 2016.

Fall Semester 2010

There were eleven (11) bias incidents reported to the Bias Protocol during fall semester 2010. Most of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus. One (1) incident was on Facebook, and another (1) incident occurred on Lake Avenue in close proximity to campus.  One (1) incident reported was in the library, 6 occurred in housing areas, 2 were reported in classes. Reports included 4 incidents involving race, 3 incidents involving sexual orientation, 1 incident involved ethnicity, and 3 incidents involved anonymous comments written by individuals. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up and support was given to victims and or the reporting individuals.

Spring and Summer Semester 2011

There were eleven (11) bias incidents reported to the Bias Protocol spring and summer semester 2011. All incidents occurred on campus or were on Facebook/email. One (1) incident was reported in housing area, 2 incidents reported were on Facebook and 1 was in an email message, 1 was reported on Blackboard, 1 incident was in a department, 1 incident was reported in an academic college, 2 incidents were reported in a classroom, 1 incident occurred off campus in close proximity to UT, and 1 incident was reported in Cox Auditorium. Reports included 3 incidents regarding race, 3 incidents involving sexual orientation (1 of the incidents involved race as well), 2 incidents regarding religion, and 1 incident regarding ethnicity, 1 incident regarding gender bias, and 1 incident involved work related issues. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate support and follow-up were taken.

Fall Semester 2011

There were four (4) bias incidents reported fall semester 2011. All of the incidents occurred on campus. Three (3) incidents were reported in housing areas, and 1 was a comment written on the Rock. Reports included 2 incidents involving race, and 2 0incidents involving sexual orientation. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate support and follow-up was made.

Spring and Summer Semester 2012

There were eight (8) bias incidents reported to the Bias Protocol during spring and summer semester 2012.  Most of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.  One (1) incident was reported on Facebook and another (1) occurred on Cumberland Avenue in close proximity to campus.  One (1) incident reported was in the Humanities and Social Sciences building, 2 occurred in housing areas, one (1) was on Pedestrian Walkway, one (1) occurred in the Communications Building, and one (1) occurred on The Rock.  Reports included 3 incidents involving race and 5 incidents involving sexual orientation.  All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Fall Semester 2012

There were five (5) bias incidents reported to the Bias Protocol during fall semester 2012.  All of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.  Two (2) incidents occurred within the Presidential Courtyard, 1 incident was in a department, 1 incident was in a class, and 1 incident occurred in a fraternity house.  Reports included one (1) incident regarding race, one (1) incident regarding sexual orientation, and 3 incidents involving bias of other natures.  All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Spring and Summer Semester 2013

There were eleven (11) bias incidents reported during the spring and summer semester of 2013.  Most of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.  One (1) incident was reported on University email.  Four (4) incidents occurred in housing areas, two (2) were reported in academic departments, one (1) was in a class, one (1) was in the library, and one (1) occurred on The Rock. One (1) incident occurred off-campus, but at a close proximity to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus. Reports involved one (1) incident regarding race, one (1) incident regarding sexual orientation, three (3) incidents regarding ethnicity, one (1) incident regarding national origin, one (1) incident regarding gender, one incident (1) regarding religion, ethnicity, race, and sexual orientation in the same incident, and three (3) incidents regarding religion.  All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Fall Semester 2013

There were six (6) bias incidents reported to the Bias Protocol during fall semester 2013.  Most of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.  Three (3) incidents occurred in housing areas, one (1) was reported outside the library, one (1) was placed on the Rock, and another (1) occurred on Cumberland Avenue off-campus. Four (4) of the reported incidents regarded sexual orientation and two (2) of the reports involved bias against race.  All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Spring and Summer Semester 2014

There were five (5) bias incidents reported during the spring and summer semester of 2014.  Some of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus while others took place off of University property.  One (1) incident was reported from a social media site.  One (1) incident occurred in an academic facility, one (1) occurred outside the Black Cultural Center, one (1) took place in an office setting, and one (1) occurred on Cumberland Avenue.  The reported incidents included four (4) issues of race and one (1) against disability.  All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Fall Semester 2014

There were ten (10) bias incidents reported during the fall 2014 semester. Most of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus with the remaining incidents occurring near the University and on social media. Four (4) incidents included sexual orientation, and there were three (3) incidents regarding race, two (2) incidents regarding gender, and one (1) incident regarding religion. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Spring and Summer Semester 2015

There were nine (9) bias incidents reported during the spring 2015 semester. All of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Bias incident locations included the Student Success Center, residence hall, classroom, volleyball court, and a fraternity house. Four (4) incidents regarded race, three (3) regarded sexual orientation, and two (2) regarded national origin. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Fall Semester 2015

There were thirteen (13) bias incidents reported during the fall 2015 semester. All of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. One (1) incident occurred at the library, two (2) incidents occurred in student housing, one (1) incident occurred at the Student Union, one (1) incident occurred at the Pride Center, two (2) incidents occurred at fraternity houses, one (1) incident occurred in a classroom, one (1) incident occurred in an academic department, one (1) incident occurred online, and three (3) incidents occurred at other places on the Knoxville campus. One incident included multiple types of bias. There were three (3) incidents regarding sexual orientation, three (3) incidents regarding gender, four (4) incidents regarding race, one (1) incident involving race and sexual orientation, and two (2) incidents regarding religion. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Spring Semester 2016

There have been twenty-one (21) bias incidents reported in the spring 2016 semester. All of the incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. One (1) incident occurred at the Pride Center, one (1) incident occurred at the Humanities and Social Sciences building, one (1) incident occurred at the Student Health Center, two (2) occurred at an academic college, one (1) incident occurred on the university transit system, one (1) involved parking & transit services, three (3) events occurred on Pedestrian Walkway, one (1) incident occurred through electronic communication, one (1) incident occurred on Phillip Fulmer Way, one (1) incident occurred at the Torchbearer, four (4) incidents occurred at the residence halls, one (1) incident occurred off campus, two (2) incidents occurred on Cumberland, and one (1) incident occurred via social media. Six (6) incidents regarded sexual orientation, six (6) incidents regarded race, six (6) incidents involved other types of bias/harassment, two (2) incidents regarded religion and sexual orientation, and one (1) incident regarded race and sexual orientation. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate follow-up was taken.

Spring 2016

Summer 2016

Two (2) bias incidents were reported to the Bias Protocol. All incidents occurred on campus. The nature of both bias incidents were harassment/other. One incident involved the Pride Center and one incident involved a non-academic department. All reported incidents were investigated and appropriate support and follow-up was made.

August 2016

One (1) bias incident was reported to the Bias Protocol. The incident occurred on campus. The nature of bias incident involved sexual orientation. The type of bias was destruction of property/vandalism. The location was the Pride Center. The reported incident was investigated and appropriate support and follow-up was made.

September 2016

Six bias incidents were reported to the Bias Education and Response Team in September 2016. The incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. The nature of bias incidents involved: (3) harassment/other, (2) sexual orientation and (1) race. The locations were: (2) Pride Center, (1) Pedestrian Walkway, (1) Presidential Court, (1) online and (1) classroom. The reported incidents were investigated or are currently under investigation and appropriate support and follow-up was made.

October 2016

Twelve bias incidents were reported to the Bias Education and Response Team in October 2016. The incidents occurred on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. The nature of the bias incidents involved: (5) race, (2) sexual orientation, (3) religion, (1) harassment/other and (1) unknown. The locations were: (3) online, (2) Pride Center, (2) residence halls, (2) Pedestrian Walkway, (1) Library lot, (1) 11th Street Garage, and (1) Vol Card Office. The reported incidents were investigated or are currently under investigation and appropriate support and follow-up was made.

December 2016

Zero (0) bias incidents were reported to the Bias Education and Response Team in December 2016.

January 2017

Three bias incidents were reported to the Bias Education and Response Team in January 2017. The nature of the bias incidents involved: (1) gender, (1) race and sexual orientation, and (1) potential vandalism/destruction of property (unfounded). The locations were: classroom (1), library (1), and Pride Center (1).
